TLDR
Sky Sports holds exclusive live rights to the County Championship in 2026 so there is no official free live stream. However, BBC Radio TMS and county club online commentary are free, and highlights packages appear on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel and BBC Sport. Some counties also stream select games via their own websites.
This guide covers every way to follow County Championship cricket in 2026 without a Sky subscription, plus how to get Sky coverage cheaper.
Insider Tip
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra streams every session of every County Championship match free via BBC Sounds. The commentary is proper cricket coverage from experienced commentators. Download BBC Sounds before the season starts and you have live ball-by-ball county cricket throughout the summer for nothing.
Why County Championship Is Hard to Watch for Free
Sky Sports has held the rights to live County Championship cricket in the UK since 1999. The current deal runs through 2028. That means no free-to-air broadcaster can show County Championship games live in the UK legally.
That said, you have more free options than you might think. Here is what is actually available without paying.
Free Option 1: BBC Sounds and BBC Radio TMS
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra provides live commentary for County Championship matches throughout the season. Every session, every day, completely free via the BBC Sounds app.
How to access: Download BBC Sounds free from the App Store, Google Play, or listen on bbc.co.uk/sounds. Search for “County Cricket” or “5 Live Sports Extra”. Select the live stream or find your match in the schedule.
During England home Tests, TMS (Test Match Special) broadcasts from grounds like Lord’s, Headingley, and Edgbaston. The same commentary team covers County Championship games in between.
BBC Sounds also stores commentary clips and highlights for 30 days after broadcast. Worth revisiting if you missed a match.
Free Option 2: County Club Commentary Streams
Several county clubs run their own free commentary streams for home matches. Quality varies but most of the 18 first-class counties provide something.
Yorkshire, Lancashire, Surrey, and Warwickshire all have established online commentary services. Check your county’s official website under “Matchday” or “Live Coverage” to see what they offer for the 2026 season.
Some counties charge a small annual membership fee for access to extended coverage including video, but basic audio commentary is typically free.
Free Option 3: Sky Sports YouTube Highlights
Sky Sports’ official YouTube channel posts County Championship highlights videos, usually same-day or next morning. These are not live but they are free and do not require a Sky subscription.
Search “County Championship 2026” on YouTube and filter by the Sky Sports channel. The highlights are typically 5-15 minutes covering the best moments from the day’s play.
The ECB Official YouTube channel also carries some County Cricket content including season preview videos and documentary content around the Division 1 title race.
Free Option 4: Attend in Person
County cricket is one of the cheapest forms of live sport in England. Day tickets start from around £12-18 for adults at most grounds, with free or very cheap entry for under-18s at many counties.
Watching County Championship in person is a different experience to the broadcast. Grounds like Headingley, The Oval, and Trent Bridge are excellent venues even for county games. The atmosphere is relaxed, you can walk around, and the cricket is high quality.

How to Get Sky Sports Cheaper for County Cricket
If you want live TV coverage, Sky Sports is the only option. But you do not have to pay full price.
Now Sports Membership via Now TV gives full Sky Sports access for around £34.99 per month without a long-term contract. You can cancel at any time. The County Championship season runs April to September so a six-month Now Sports subscription covers the whole season for less than a full Sky package.
Sky Sports week pass on Now TV costs around £24.99 for 7 days of access. Worth using for a big Division 1 title decider or a Roses match you particularly want to watch.
County Championship 2026 Season Key Dates
The County Championship season runs from April to September 2026. The two divisions play in blocks either side of the Vitality Blast T20 competition in June and July.
Division 1 and Division 2 each contain 10 counties. The Division 1 title race typically reaches its climax in the final weeks of September. Check the ECB website for the full 2026 fixture schedule.
The Vitality Blast runs alongside the Championship and is covered by free highlights on Channel 4. See the Vitality Blast ticket guide if you want to attend T20 games this summer.
