TLDR
The best free legal sports streaming apps in the UK right now are BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4. Between them you get Wimbledon, selected Premier League and WSL games, Six Nations, F1 highlights, and athletics. All three are completely free with no subscription.
This guide covers every free legal option in the UK, what sport each one carries, and which ones are actually worth having on your phone or TV.
Insider Tip
BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 are all available as Smart TV apps on Samsung, LG, Sony, and Freeview Play sets. If you have a modern TV, you do not need a streaming stick or Chromecast to access any of them. Just search for the app in your TV’s app store.
BBC iPlayer: The Best Free Sports App in the UK
BBC iPlayer is the strongest free sports streaming option available in the UK. The BBC holds live rights to a large range of sport and almost all of it ends up on iPlayer.
What you can watch free on BBC iPlayer:
Wimbledon. The BBC shows Centre Court and No.1 Court live every day of the championships. Plus dedicated coverage across BBC One, BBC Two, and the red button. This is free and always has been.
Six Nations rugby. BBC and ITV share the rights. BBC typically shows England home games and selected others live. Full coverage available on iPlayer.
Women’s Super League. Selected live WSL games throughout the season. The BBC tends to pick up the biggest fixtures.
FA Cup. BBC shows selected rounds live, including quarter-finals and later rounds in some years.
Athletics. BBC has rights to the World Athletics Championships and UK Athletics. Full live coverage on iPlayer.
F1 highlights. Every Formula 1 race is available as a highlights package on BBC iPlayer the same evening after Sky Sports’ live broadcast.
Cricket highlights. England Test matches are shown in a nightly highlights programme on BBC Two and iPlayer. Not live, but available within a few hours of the close of play.
How to access: Download BBC iPlayer free from the App Store, Google Play, or your Smart TV app store. A TV licence is required to watch live sport. Catch-up content does not require a licence.
ITVX: Free Live Sport With No Login Required
ITVX carries a solid lineup of free sport and the key advantage is that you do not need to create an account to watch live content. Just open the app and press play.
What you can watch free on ITVX:
Six Nations rugby. ITV typically shows Ireland and France home games, plus selected rounds. Shared with BBC across the six-week tournament.
Women’s football. ITV holds rights to some England Women internationals and selected WSL fixtures. Worth checking before each matchweek.
World Cup and Euros. When a major football tournament lands in a year ITV has rights, most of the group stage games go on ITVX free.
Horse racing. Grand National and Cheltenham highlights appear on ITVX.
How to access: Download ITVX free on any device. Available on Smart TVs, iOS, Android, Fire TV, and web browser. No TV licence required.
Channel 4: F1 Highlights and The Hundred
Channel 4 does not show as much live sport as BBC or ITV but it covers two areas well.
Formula 1 highlights. Every F1 race weekend has a highlights programme on Channel 4. This typically airs Sunday evening after the race. Not live, but free and available on catch-up via the Channel 4 app (now called 4stream).
The Hundred cricket. Channel 4 holds The Hundred rights and broadcasts selected men’s and women’s matches live and free.
Paralympics. Channel 4 has been the home of Paralympic coverage in the UK and typically shows extensive live sport from each Games.
How to access: Download 4stream (formerly All 4) free from the App Store, Google Play, Smart TV stores, or via web browser. Free with ads. No subscription or TV licence required.
YouTube: Official Club and League Channels
YouTube is genuinely useful for sport in 2026. Most major leagues and clubs run official channels with free highlights, full match replays (sometimes), and behind-the-scenes content.
Sky Sports YouTube uploads Premier League and cricket highlights within hours of broadcast. Free and does not require any account.
BBC Sport YouTube has Wimbledon daily highlights packages and athletics coverage.
ECB Official posts cricket highlights including The Hundred and England Women matches.
Premier League YouTube runs a weekly highlights show free to UK viewers. Useful if you miss Match of the Day.
YouTube is the best free option for catching up on matches you missed. It does not replace a subscription for live access, but the volume of free highlights content in 2026 is substantial.
Amazon Prime Video: Not Free but Worth Noting
Amazon Prime Video is not free but worth mentioning because it is often already included in people’s Prime membership (around £8.99 per month).
Amazon holds rights to selected Premier League matches, typically around Christmas and Boxing Day fixtures. If you already have Prime, you are already paying for these games.
Amazon also shows US Open tennis and selected international cricket. Check the Prime Video Sport section to see what is coming up on your existing subscription.
The FA Player App
The FA Player is a free app from the Football Association that carries some live WSL coverage and non-league football. It is not as comprehensive as BBC iPlayer but worth having if you follow women’s football or lower leagues.
Download it free from the App Store or Google Play. No subscription required.

Watching from Outside the UK?
BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 are all geo-locked to UK IP addresses. A VPN connects you to a UK server and restores access. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both work with all three apps reliably.
