Day 1 of a Test match sells out quickly at every ground. Day 4 and Day 5 tickets are often available right up to the day of play and are significantly cheaper because there is no guarantee the match runs that long. If you are flexible, a late Day 4 or 5 ticket often gives you the best cricket at the best price.
Lord’s Cricket Ground, London
Location: St John’s Wood, London NW8 8QN. 5-minute walk from St John’s Wood Underground (Jubilee line).
Capacity: 30,000
Lord’s is the home of cricket and it shows. The Long Room, the Grade II listed Pavilion, and the slope across the outfield make it unlike any other ground in the world. England play 1-2 Test matches here each summer.
Honest assessment: The ground is beautiful but the facilities in older stands are dated. Queues for food and drinks are long on big match days. Get there early and bring your own food if you can (check the ground’s regulations first).
Ticket prices: Test match day tickets from around £50-90 depending on the day and the stand. Members’ allocation sells out quickly. General sale opens several months before each match.
Best seats: The Compton Stand and Edrich Stand (north and south end) give the best combination of price and view. The Tavern Stand is popular for a more relaxed day.
Headingley, Leeds
Location: St Michael’s Lane, Leeds LS6 3BR. 20-minute bus ride from Leeds city centre or a 10-minute walk from Headingley station.
Capacity: 18,350
Headingley produces some of the best Test match atmospheres in England. Yorkshire fans are loud and the ground feels genuinely electric when England are battling under the Headingley floodlights.
Honest assessment: The North Stand redevelopment has improved facilities significantly. The ground is more compact than Lord’s or Edgbaston, which makes for a closer, louder experience. Weather in Leeds can be unpredictable. Bring a layer.
Ticket prices: Test match tickets from around £35-70. Day tickets for County Championship are typically £12-18.
Edgbaston, Birmingham
Location: Edgbaston, Birmingham B5 7QU. 15-minute bus from Birmingham city centre. Bike parking available.
Capacity: 25,000
Edgbaston has the best modern facilities of any England Test venue. The stadium has been significantly redeveloped and the concourses, food options, and sight lines are all excellent.
Honest assessment: Atmosphere can be hit-and-miss depending on the crowd. Vitality Blast games here are consistently loud. Test matches on Day 1 against Australia or India are special. Midweek Day 3 county games can feel a bit empty. Check what match is on before you go.

The Oval, London
Location: Kennington Oval, London SE11 5SS. 2-minute walk from Oval Underground (Northern line).
Capacity: 25,500
The Oval hosts the final Test of each England home series and is traditionally the game where the series is either decided or celebrated. The ground is easy to get to, well-equipped, and surrounded by pubs and restaurants in Kennington and Vauxhall.
Honest assessment: The Oval is the most relaxed of the London venues. The crowd is mixed, the facilities are solid, and the location means a full day out is easy to arrange around the cricket. Good for first-timers.
Ticket prices: Test match day tickets from £40-75. Earlier days in the series sell out faster. Day 4 and 5 tickets are often available close to the date.
Trent Bridge, Nottingham
Location: Radcliffe Road, Nottingham NG2 6AG. 25-minute walk from Nottingham city centre or 10 minutes by tram to Meadow Lane stop.
Capacity: 17,500
Trent Bridge is often voted the most beautiful Test ground in England. The grass banks, the Fox Road Stand, and the view from the popular Hound Road terrace give it a character the modern venues cannot replicate.
Honest assessment: Smaller capacity than Lord’s or Edgbaston means tickets go quickly. Book early. The atmosphere on a good Day 1 against a major touring side is as good as anywhere in the country.
Ticket prices: Test match tickets from £35-65. Among the more affordable Test venues.
Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester
Location: Talbot Road, Manchester M16 0PX. 10-minute tram ride from Manchester city centre (Metrolink to Old Trafford stop).
Capacity: 26,000
Old Trafford is a proper northern cricket ground. The redevelopment in recent years has added a hotel and improved the stands but it retains the feel of a traditional Lancashire venue.
Honest assessment: Weather is the variable you cannot control. Old Trafford historically sees more rain than any other England Test venue. Check the forecast before you go and know the ground’s rain refund policy.

Ageas Bowl, Southampton
Location: Botley Road, West End, Southampton SO30 3XH. Located outside Southampton city centre. Train to Hedge End then taxi, or park and walk (large car park on site).
Capacity: 15,000
The Ageas Bowl (now Utilita Bowl after commercial renaming) is a modern purpose-built stadium with a hotel attached. Excellent facilities, good sight lines, and typically sunny conditions by Southampton standards.
Honest assessment: The location outside the city means driving is the easiest option unless you are already in Southampton. The ground works well for day-night matches and T20 games where the drive home timing is manageable.
Ticket prices: Test match tickets from £35-60. Among the more affordable Test venues.
