TLDR
Wales’ Six Nations home games are split between BBC Wales (free on iPlayer) and S4C (free on iPlayer). Welsh club rugby in the United Rugby Championship (URC) requires a Premier Sports or S4C subscription. S4C is free via iPlayer and shows Welsh regional games. The Six Nations and autumn internationals are your best free options.
This guide covers where to watch Welsh rugby free in 2026-27 and the cheapest options for URC club rugby.
Insider Tip
S4C is a Welsh-language channel but most rugby commentary is also available in English via a SAP audio track. If you open S4C on BBC iPlayer during a Welsh rugby broadcast, look for the audio options button and switch to English if you prefer. S4C is available free to everyone in the UK on iPlayer regardless of whether you are based in Wales.
Wales Six Nations: Free on BBC and S4C
Wales’ Six Nations matches are shared between BBC Wales and S4C. Both are free to watch on BBC iPlayer.
BBC Wales shows selected Wales games on BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer. These typically include the highest-profile fixtures such as England vs Wales and the final round.
S4C is the Welsh-language channel that holds rights to some Wales Six Nations games. It is available free on BBC iPlayer for everyone in the UK, not just those based in Wales. Search “S4C” on BBC iPlayer or go to the S4C channel on Freeview (channel 4).
The Six Nations runs from February to March. The match broadcast assignments for Wales games are confirmed before the tournament starts. Check BBC Wales Sport and the Six Nations official website for confirmed broadcast details for 2026.
Wales Autumn Internationals: Free on BBC Wales
Wales’ autumn international series (typically November) is broadcast on BBC Wales and BBC iPlayer. Home games at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff are shown live and free.
The autumn internationals usually feature Wales hosting three or four nations including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, and Fiji. All home games go to BBC Wales or S4C.
Welsh Club Rugby: URC (United Rugby Championship)
The four Welsh professional clubs (Scarlets, Cardiff Rugby, Ospreys, Dragons) compete in the United Rugby Championship (URC). This is the main professional club competition.
Premier Sports holds primary URC live rights in the UK. Around £12.99 per month. This covers most regular season games and the play-offs.
S4C shows selected Welsh regional URC games free, particularly Scarlets and Ospreys home fixtures. These appear on S4C and are available on BBC iPlayer.
URC TV (urtv.rugby) offers a direct streaming subscription for all URC games. Pricing varies. Check the URC website for current UK subscription options.
How to Access S4C on BBC iPlayer
S4C is available within BBC iPlayer for all UK viewers. Open BBC iPlayer and either search for S4C or find it under Channels. Live S4C content streams directly through iPlayer.
On Freeview, S4C is channel 4. On Sky, S4C is channel 104. Available throughout the UK.
During Welsh rugby broadcasts, S4C typically offers English commentary alongside Welsh. Use your TV’s audio track selector or the iPlayer audio options to switch between languages.
For all free sport options in the UK, see the complete free sports streaming guide. For the Six Nations full broadcast guide including England and Ireland games, see the BBC iPlayer sport guide.
Watching from Outside Wales?
S4C is available free on BBC iPlayer across the whole UK, not just in Wales. Open BBC iPlayer and search S4C. For viewers outside the UK entirely, a VPN connecting to a UK server restores access.
