TLDR
Wimbledon 2026 is free to watch. The BBC has held TV rights to Wimbledon for decades and covers every day of the championships live and free on BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC iPlayer. Sky Sports also covers it but you do not need it. All Centre Court and No.1 Court matches are on the BBC.
This guide covers the BBC’s Wimbledon 2026 coverage in full, when to tune in, and what to do if you are watching from outside the UK.
Insider Tip
BBC iPlayer shows up to 18 simultaneous court streams during Wimbledon’s first week. While BBC One is showing Centre Court, iPlayer runs live streams from courts 2, 3, 4, 12, 14, 17, and 18 at the same time. Open BBC iPlayer on your TV or laptop during the first week to watch matches the main channel is not covering.
Is Wimbledon on Free TV in 2026?
Yes. The BBC has broadcast Wimbledon since 1937. The current rights deal keeps it on free-to-air television in the UK through the late 2020s.
Wimbledon is a listed sporting event in the UK. This means it must be available on free-to-air television. You cannot put it behind a paywall. Even if Sky Sports tries to negotiate exclusive rights in the future, they legally cannot take it off free TV for UK viewers.
For 2026, the setup is the same as every year. BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC iPlayer cover the championships. No subscription required.
What the BBC Shows Free at Wimbledon 2026
The BBC covers Wimbledon extensively across its platforms.
BBC One shows the main Centre Court session live each afternoon. This is typically the highest-profile match of the day and runs until around 8-9pm.
BBC Two covers No.1 Court and switches to Centre Court or additional courts as matches finish. Most BBC Two coverage runs from 11am-1pm before switching to BBC One for the afternoon session.
BBC iPlayer has up to 18 simultaneous live court streams during the first and second weeks. This is the biggest advantage of the BBC coverage. While the main channel is showing Centre Court, iPlayer runs live feeds from multiple other courts. You can follow a specific player’s match even when BBC One is focused elsewhere.
BBC Red Button provides additional courts and match alerts throughout the day.
BBC Sport website and app carry live text commentary, scores, and match-by-match news throughout the championships.
Wimbledon 2026 Dates
Wimbledon 2026 runs for two weeks in late June and early July. The exact dates follow the same pattern each year:
First Monday: Championships begin. First round matches across all courts.
Middle Sunday: A rest day. No play scheduled (though this has been abandoned in recent years).
Second week: Fourth round, quarter-finals, and semi-finals.
Finals weekend: Ladies’ Singles Final on Saturday, Gentlemen’s Singles Final on Sunday. Both on BBC One.
Check the official Wimbledon website (wimbledon.com) for confirmed 2026 dates and the BBC Sport website for the broadcast schedule.
Does Sky Sports Cover Wimbledon?
Sky Sports does have Wimbledon coverage through its dedicated tennis channels. But you do not need it.
Sky shows some additional court coverage that the BBC does not carry and has in-depth analysis programming around the main matches. But all the matches that matter, all Centre Court and No.1 Court action, is on BBC for free.
Unless you want extensive analysis programming and access to outer court matches the BBC is not showing, there is no reason to pay for Sky Sports Wimbledon coverage.
